PASADENA - More then 10 years after voters passed a $240 million bond to fund school improvements, the Pasadena Unified School District board tonight will discuss whether to initiate a survey gauging community support for another possible bond or property tax.

District officials say they need a new bond or parcel tax to meet a burgeoning list of school improvements. Officials said they would like to put the measure on the ballot in November.

With PUSD facing a potential $10 million loss in revenue from the state for the 2008-09 year, keeping "a reform movement going" and providing programs will be difficult without a bond or new parcel tax, said Stephen Brinkman, the district's chief of staff.

Any bone measure would need to be placed on the ballot by August, 88 days before the November election. It also would need 55 percent approval from voters to pass, while a parcel tax would need a two-thirds majority.

A parcel tax would pay for larger reform programs, possibly footing the costs associated with transitionally John Muir High School into the five smaller learning communities and the district's middle school reform plan, officials said.

The bond measure would solely focus on fixing up 30 PUSD schools. The district is developing a facilities master plan that outlines priorities, such as technology upgrades, Brinkman said.

The last PUSD bond measure to pass was in 1997. The problem-plagued Measure Y generated $240 million to modernize

schools. After adding in state funding through Proposition 1A and other sources, the total surged to more than $300 million.

The whole story:

We trusted these people with hundreds of millions and they hired cronies, pals and contributors to work on the project, promised oversight then squandered mass quantities of our money. What did we get? Closed schools and a junior high and high school system you couldn't pay me enough or use a big enough gun to force me to put my kids in.

We got a new superintendent who hasn't done shit for PUSD or the kids yet and he wants to ask us for money? Save my cash. Get rid of the consultants and stop wasting time on foolishness, as my mama used to tell me. Get down to business and fix the damn schools THEN think about asking me for more of my hard earned money.

Bond measure? How about recall of the school board and starting over from scratch? When we've got schools I'd put my kids in, maybe I'll vote for your bond measure. Until then, get the f*ck outta my face. IDIOTS! IDIOTS! IDIOTS!

Ooooo. Guess attack dog Virginia Hoge's gonna be talkin' nasty about me again. Hey PUSD leaders, how much of my tax money you payin' her to do this shit?

I really wanted to give Diaz a chance and see what he can do, and this is what he's come up with? back to garlic country for you, dude, if you think PUSD voters are gonna trust you and the seven stooges with more of our money when PUSD screwed the Measure Y deal up so bad.

There should be a call for an independent AUDIT of Measure Y. That will smoke out how much $$ reached the goal and how much did not. It will begin some accountability where the rubber meets the road where there is none now. There can be no better performance measure and the PUSD should welcome it if they spent the money well and if they want more. AUDIT AUDIT AUDIT!!!

I will not put one more dime into PUSD until I find out where all of my dimes went in 1997.

I don't even send my kids to this school district because it's crooked.

Everyone on the school board should be fired and the state should be brought in.

This is just to the point of being ridiculous now.

I don't blame you one bit Dormitas.

I'd be better off giving my money to that homeless guy with the cat on Fair Oaks & Colorado that's obviously just a punk rocker who is too lazy to get a job - than to give my money to PUSD.

PUSD - a big waste of time, a big waste of taxpayers' money.

Makes me glad I don't have children AND make me not want children.

"Any bone measure" please do not correct this typo. It's perfect.

Spend spend spend don't think just spend spend spend!

Wouldn't it be great if we could use PUSD and efficient in the same sentence?

Not surprising though, seems to be the basic plan for most government officials...if it is broken, well then we need you to give us more money.

bone was the S-Nooze's typo. Pretty fair assessment though. PUSD's gonna give us all the bone.

It's sad that there are individual school sites that are doing a fairly decent job (considering what they have to work with) and 351 S. Hudson gives them no support (or even gets in the way). The problem is at the top. I agree with calls for audit.

I had to check the original story on PSN to see for myself and sure enough...at least *three* typos. In a story about education (granted, school facilities, but whatever). Insert snark about a PUSD-educated copy editor here.

As a former Pasadena student (a recent one), I can attest to the idiocy. Have a problem with overcrowding? No sweat! Just close a few schools.

Can we export PUSD to the Third World and scare them into birth control?

Example of idiocracy:

Why did Supr. Diaz appoint THREE assistant principals to John Muir.
Two of them are PhD. ($$$$)
This is a recipe for waste and disaster.

How is the woman supposed to do her job? Sabotage!

Ms. Havisham, obviously you are unfamiliar with School Board logic when it comes to spending -

if one is good, then three must be better. Besides, who cares it's not our money.

The 97 Bond measure opened the fiscal gates. The Woodbury Road Warehouse site acquired sparkling new service vehicles almost overnight, replacing a tired ass fleet. (Student grades be damned....)
