Council Blow by Blow for 1-12-09

First one of the new year and they're startin' on time.

Nothing to report from the closed session.

Not much to get worked up about. Robinson's actually there and Madison, too. Holden's missing this time. Guess he finally got that wax thing right. Dr. Sondra Thomas leads the pledge.

CEREMONIAL BACK-PATS FROM THE COUNCIL: Dr. Thomas gets kudos for the Bright Futures Scholars program for kids who have a 3.0 GPA from PUSD. The kid right in front'swearing a t-shirt with a big skull on it. Way to go kid! They give a certificate to Bogaard and Beck. Bogaard gives a proclamation declaring February as scholars month.

Jacque Robinson talks about being sick at the end of the year. She asks everybody to remember Roy Haines who did a lot for youth sports in Pasadena. They're gonna adjourn in his honor. He deserves it. Gordo chimes in too.

PUBLIC COMMENT:

Kurt Thorgerson: Wacko's back talking about eco-events he wants to have in Pasadena but he's got no clue about really doing anything.
Laronda Heartfield: She's talking about a program she thinkin' about to help kids stay on the right path via God. Sounds like she's got a bad cold. She's down on capitalism and greed.

CONSENT CALENDAR: Madison makes Water and Power goddess Phyllis Curry dance a little explaining why a consultant deserves $550K to do what the staff oughta be able to do. They're spending more money on consultants and our cops are gonna provide radio dispatch for Montebello cops, too. Parsons is doing soundwalls by the freeway for $800K. McAustin wants pretty ones. Tyler asks why Parsons from Pasadena got the job. Another one with no clue. Parsons's in Pasadena, dude. Playhouse people want good trees and waste a buncha time talking about what they're gonna do anyways. Tyler loves trees, man. Sure be nice if neighborhoods north of the 210 got the same kinda consideration from him. They spend 20 minutes talkin' 'bout the trees then pass the thing anyway.

Council passes it all except they gotta hear from La Canada white folks about leasing a parking lot to JPL. La Canada horsey folks don't want the biggest job generator in Pasadena to have someplace for their workers to park. Good thinking people. Like there's not any space up there for those horse people from La Canada. (LA CANADA!) Geez peeps! AND they took an 1 1/2 hours on this stuff.

GENERAL PLAN COMMITTEE: Staff people are hiring consultants to tell us all what we want. They're putting a committee together to lead the public process and bring new people in. They want to teach us all what we're gonna wanna do. It's all gonna make us all ready to take whatever the staff wants to jam down our throats. Gordo asks how the committee's gonna include diverse people from all over town, and gets a dance from the staff guy. Madison's saying there's gonna me some balance but it's all his folks who are gonna get appointed.
Public Commenters: Earth child Emily Stork wants people other than commissioners on the committee. Richard McDonald from Planning Commission likes staff and sucks up some. Roberta Marti representing the bitching biddies says she wants the whole commuinty heard but really means only if they do what the biddies want. Mick Hanson who's another biddy complaining about the same shit we keep hearing about from the wealthy white ones. Phoebie Wall Wilson wants two councilmembers on the committee. She wants to committee to do real work not just do community outreach. Christal Balvin, bitching biddy honcho, harps on the same shit all the old white women say. She don't like the planning department. She wants a citizen task force. Audrey Kelly dittoes it all for West Pasadena and likes the planning idea so that must mean most people on it are West Pasadena people. Marcia Rude says it needs to be a peoples plan not staff. Gotta go along with that. She wants 20 people on a citizen advisory commission. Sue Mossman from Pasadena Heritage wants the consultants to bring people together. Nina Chomsky loves Balvin's biddiness. Some troll sits in the first row and looks like somebody farted through the whole meeting. Turns out she's a Livvie who wants neighborhood people on the committee. Mary Berry from La Canada (LA CANADA!) joins the biddies. Bob Kneisel, so far the lone dude to talk except for the planning dude, agrees with the biddies too. Who choreographed this dance, anyway?
I'm sorry but I think it's kinda sad when our city staff needs to hire somebody to help them listen to what people have to say. Staff's running it already and not letting their own committee pick the consultants.
McAustin wants to bring the biddies into the process. Yikes! Put your finger in the dyke and stop progress. She wants council people on the committee. Madison's equivocating on it trying real hard not to have to work at it. Airheaderlein wants the two sentence description. REALLY! He asked for that 'cause he couldn't figure out what the group is supposed to do. Bogus Bill talks about Vancouver and wants to know about the balance between housing and jobs and sounds like he wants to push the whole thing off a year. In the end they add two spots for bitching biddies on the committee. Council spends most of their time talkin' 'bout how they can get outta spendin' time on this. Guess it ain't so important to Bogus Bill and Co. They end up with twelve people on the committee with the Chamber appointing somebody, too.

COUNCIL PALS appointed to committees.

PREAPPLICATION CONFERENCE REPORT ABOUT ST. LUKE'S: It's outta wack with the General Plan whatever it is. It's got 352 senior units and assisted living apartments. It's gonna take a year to get permits for this one. Marvin Schecter comes out to complain about it. He wants Pasadena to take it over and make it a hospital again. Dr. Jacqueline Jacobs is more lost now then when she was on the school board. Now she's yakkin' for PCC and wants a medical facility there. So, why ain't PCC buyin' it then? She says PCC wants it to have urgent care. Patrick Perry says let it get developed. Woodland Road neighbor says it's gonna screw up their neighborhood.

SCIENTOLOGY REMODEL PLANS: They wanna redo the old building at Raymond and Colorado in Old Town. Looks like Groucho Marx's kid's the planner on this one. Sounds like the Tom Cruisers wanna make it from a commercial building to a religious one. They just aren't comin' outta the closet yet. "Come out of the closet Tom Cruise!" the best South park ever. Architect babe talks about the project and says they want to cooperate with the city.

FINANCE COMMITTEE: They're gonna spend a coupla million to cut Kinneloa Street under the freeway. Shoulda done that 40 years ago people instead of spending my money on it now.
Annual Financial Statements: This is the audit of last year's spending, so let's rush right through it all. The new finance director is a black dude named Andy Green. They blast through it without explaining anything, like why it's unqualified, and no talk about where $200 + million went and what we bought for all that $$$.
Weird bond deal: I didn't get this at all. Something about what they're doing about bonds nobody wants to buy.
They're paying $1 million for planning consultants to do work 'cause they are shorthanded two people. Dude, pay me a half mil and I'll check all you're f*ing plans for ya!

There's some talk about the five goals. And they talk a little about general plan principles. Sounds like they're gonna talk about it all on the 26th.
McAustin wants to talk about 1% arts money 'cause some loser whined about it in the paper a coupla weeks ago. Tyler wants to know about city support of non-profits.

Six hours of talk with nothing much done. The Livvies are gonna get lots of clout with the general plan. So the surrender monkey's gonna be happy. The rest of us'll get screwed. But hey, that's our Pasadena Way: process the f* outta everything so it comes out the way the wealthy white folks on the hill want.

Looks like it's going to be a short winter as JR saw her own shadow.

Money to put the street through but none for soundwalls. typical. I should have bought east of Hill.

Everyone knows that Raphael Henderson was the most qualified, most charismatic and the most self-giving candidate in that election. Robinson is clueless and lazy and Salzer never did one thing to help the African-Americans or underpriveledged in Pasadena. We blew it in 2007.

Not true, he has certainly done more than JR. I hope whoever our rep is would do more for ALL the underprivileged in D1.

Great summary. Glad that you are here as it means the blog world is not as hopeless as the rest of the media....

Raphael Henderson is GOD!

It has to be his mom or himself who's posting this garbage. Nobody else would waste time writing about him.

Except me because I'm an asshole.

Here's the deal:

Raphael Henderson is an egotistical
moron who lost the election coming in a very distant 3rd and never was a factor because we all saw through his charade. Why John Van de Camp and Mayor Bogaard supported him God only knows.

Jacque Robinson had a strong youth volunteer core and the Delta
Sorority group from all over helping her. The womens group the 50/50 Club also was very instrumental in her winning. Was she the best candidate & most qualified for the district, no but she won and it's her seat until 2011 or if she would accept a position in the new administration.

Robin Salzer lost the election because of one thing, racism directed at him from the publisher of the Pasadena Journal. When it looked like he was making inroads for a substantial amount of the African-American vote, the publisher got scared and targeted both Salzer and Councilman Chris Holden. Was Salzer the best candidate, who knows but it was quite obvious to many in the community that he had this star quality and ability to connect with everyone. He had everything going for him with the exception that he was white. He could probably win in any district he ran in in the future because people just like him. Most think that he's running already but not sure where.

1. It's time to stop the barbs at Jacque Robinson. Maybe time will make her better and she is the elected one so either support her or shut up.

2. Robin Salzer founded the Lemonade Brigade, mentors youth at Muir in self esteem and job related issues and from what I understand was asked to join the Executive Board for the Pasadena NAACP and the Center for Family and Community Services. I guess that ends the debate on his involvment with the African-American community and the underpriveliged.

3. Raphael Henderson will never be elected to the city council in district 1. People don't like him and he's the arrogant one not Robinson. This guy has no connection to the community and wanted the glamour but not the work. Was he the most qualified, what a joke. Robinson should be fine and Salzer would have been an excellent choice as well.

No, she should do her JOB or resign. These folks who claim Robinson isn't performing because of lack of support are missing the point completely and promoting the world's lamest excuse for an elected official.

Maybe time will make her better? Are you serious?e don't have time for her to get better we need representation.

Then who would be a better councilmember than Robinson? None out there is there. She knows more about district 1 than all of the other candidates combined because she was born in the district. Robinson also has better communication and people skills than the losers who ran against her. Because of her age she is the only one who has done anything for the young people and teens in Northwest Pasadena. She beat six challengers including a legend in his own mind Raphael Henderson. She then beat in a huge landslide runoff win a mega-millionaire who never did a damn thing for anybody in Northwest Pasadena and should have been running in district 6 where he belongs.

Give her a couple of terms and she'll be great. Have patience. Chill. Relax. She has potential and you all know it.

What the f_ck? Have patience? Chill? What the hell is that?
No one had to have patience with Margaret McAustin. Either you're ready or you're not. We got caught up in the emotion and lost sight of the prize. We may have put one of our own in the seat but we got bamboozeled and short changed in the results and the thank you.

Anonymous at 11:16 am,

I think (and hope) you can make your point without misrepresenting the facts.

Fact: JR won by 119 votes against Robin, which is not a "hugh landslide runoff win".

Fact: Robin, as mentioned in an earlier post, has founded the Lemonade Brigade, mentors youth at Muir in self esteem and job related issues and has hired many disadvantaged youths at his restaurant from District 1 and throughout the City, which disproves your statement that Robin "never did a damn thing for anybody in Northwest Pasadena".

I appreciate the back and forth on this blog site and the various opinions expressed, but do not misrepresent facts in order to try and strengthen your point.

I will personally back JR (who I voted for thank you very much!)when SHE SHOWS UP AND LOOKS LIKE SHE IS NOT SLEEPING.

I have heard her speak at three seperate functions in the NorthWest. For as educated and as well read as she is supposed to be - she looks bored, out of her league and over her head.

We made a huge mistake. And why haven't the Pasadena Journal and the NAACP taken her to task for her work so far.

It seems to me that they couldn't distance themselves from her any further than they already have.

Sorry - she blew it and it's time for her to do the right thing and leave.

And I live in the NW and a woman of color and can say these things so let's not play the race card.

Thanks.

The only reason Robin Salzer lost the election was Racism directed at him from the publisher of the Pasadena Journal. I met Robin when he was compaigning but knew of his generosity within the community for years. The bogus crap about his wife being the councilmember or his money or even the fact that he was rather new to the district was a stand to degrade him into losing. After speaking with him at several of the forums I believe his vision far extended from District 1 and would have been a positive and unifying effect on the city of Pasadena as a whole.

Saying that, I also think that Jacque Robinson will do a better job than she has shown so far. Many expectations were put on her and the job has been more difficult than expected. Give her time. I voted for Robin but I'll support Jacque if she is my representative.

Raphael Henderson seems to have ran a campaign based more on himself than on the visions presented by Robin and Jacque. Once you got past the fancy suits and rhetoric you found an empty suit and a meaningless voice.

District 1 needs a lot of help. They need jobs for the kids, affordable housing for the seniors and most importantly a feeling of hope and promise that things will improve.

Support our elected officials, disagree when merited, but support them or vote them out. That's our right.

Maybe the election of President Obama will help remove the racism that permeated the last election in District 1.

1.Robinson has a lot to learn but
she'll be fine. Most freshmen
electeds have to go through a
learning curve. City of Pasadena
politics isn't for the faint of
heart. As long as her work ethic
is high we'll support her.

2.Salzer almost pulled off the
impossible in the election and
pulled in more minority votes
than any white candidate with
exception of Bill Bogaard's
mayoral race. He had an instant
connection with people, they
liked him, he was a successful
guy who didn't forget his roots.
He proved that he could win in
any district that he ran in
providing that he lived in the
district.

3.All of this Raphael Henderson
speculation is just that. Both
Robinson and Salzer would beat
him in landslide proportions if
he ran against either of them
head to head. Forgotten is the
fact that he came in a distant
3rd place in the election and
Salzer beat out 2 African-
American candidates and a Latino.
Robinson has a young political
machine and union connections and
Salzer has a great work ethic,
an Obama & Clinton way about
himself and he owns an iconic
restaurant. Don't count either of
them out of the political fray
anytime soon.

"salzer has an obama clinton way about himself?" Are you kidding? I agree that he is ok but let's keep it real: 1. He is Republican; 2. He is married to a conservative Republican; 3. Both he and his wife were big "W" supporters. He's likeable yes, but let's keep it real..

"I know Robin, Robin is my friend, Robin sir, is no Barack Obama!" As for Clinton, well, maybe we should ask his staff.....

A friend of mine on ACT told me that Salzer is a registered Independent which probably calls for interesting family dinner conversations. I guess the Obama reference was that he scored more Black votes in District 1 than anyone had anticipated, especially with 3 Black candidates in the race. He always seemed like a straight shooter, genuine and I agree, likeable. As for the Clinton reference, he has a way about himself when he enters a room or is with a group of people but I don't think that he has any intern problems like BJ Bill.

The guy is a class act in every way. I'm told that he may run for Madison's seat if he doesn't run again. He's got our vote.
