Council Blow by Blow for 5/11-09 Featuring the lightweights, errrr. school board members on the undercard

Joint meeting with the Board of Education.

Prognostication: Lots of talk, self congratulations, mutual ass kissing. No actions taken. Nothing changes. Kids still drop out in droves for lives on the streets and bangin' in my 'hood. Leroy Barnes a PUSD kid? Ya think?

'Nuff of my prefight rant.

THEY'RE OFF:

The badger and the beanpole are runnin' the meeting. It's way hard to hear on the internet broadcast so I might miss a buncha stuff. Ain't I the lucky one?

Selinske intros the new people who get to talk about themselves. Tornek isn't there but Bogaard introduces him for himself. The guy moved here to be planning director in the 80s. Great job dude, that's when we had the no growth initiative and all the fights over unstoppable development. new school boarders Ramon Miramontes is an educrat who's only lived here for 8 years and lives near Devil's Gate. Elizabeth Pomroy teaches at PCC and looks like another inbred British royal.

FORMER ACTING CHIEF CHRISTOPHER VACINO TALKS ABOUT POLICE INTERNS and thanks PCC for making it happen. The interns introduce themselves. Their all high schoolers and seem like good kids. Interns don't cost anything so it's really good. Phelps asks about a public service academy and gets told by Diaz that's not in the cards. Honoitz triss to wrest some cash away from the city for more interns in other departments.

REPORT ON BUDGETS: Finance director Andy Green does the report. City's $8.2 million in the hole next year. Health Department's screwed. He says the Obama stimulus isn't gonna fix the problems. Fire and Polie retirements are haunting city finances. And nobody's sure how fucked we 're gonna be after the state gets through with their budget cluster fuck, I mean deliberations. PUSD guy John Papalardo says their cutting $12.5 million by reducing catergorical programs and expect to get screwed by the state budget, too.

Public comment: Karen Taylor from Right Girl says give us money to help girls be creative. Trevor Bryant from Altadena says PUSD is doing better and needs help and wants the City to pay for public schools. Emily Stork from ACT says vote for the propositions. Micelle Miner says pay for public school. Ruth Milky says look out for public health and put money in schools. Debra Repp says give us money. Rev. Paul Sawyer wants the city to pay for a commission to look at Altadena, Pasadena and other places because of violence and wants community policing. He wants to coddle criminals and not arrest gangster druggies. ACLU's here folks. Dawn Keefe wants to get money for schools too. Somebody got these folks all to turn out. ACTer John Fermin says vote yes on the proposition and the city should combat gang violence and give money directly to support the schools. You gotta be shitting me right? They got 20% dropouts according to the S-Nooze and I gotta put my kids in private school but my taxes oughta go to PUSD even more than now? Wake these assholes up somebody please! Funny how all the PUSD beggars are white folks, not the people who get stuck in the shitty schools 'cause they got no place else to go. One woman complains about how teachers are failing 2/3 of their calss and somebody oughta stick up for the kids.

Honowitz whines about schools losing money and wants to grab some city cash through capital projects and wants us to pay for artificial turf at schools and move district educrats into city offices. Uh uh? Miramontes talks about the Muir kid who got shot and he's harrangueing the city about how the schools suck. Not about how they are failing the kids, like every one of hte Rose City kids who don't graduate. Robinson sticks up for the city. Nobody says maybe PUSD oughta do a better f*ing job teaching and graduating kids. Harrison talks about doing business different but let's see that for a while before anybody throws more $$$ down the PUSD rathole. At least he says lket's not ask for money and do other things. Madison says we need to fix the schools. Renatta the Hutt likes Fermin and mutters on about being born in January and says she knows the city is making cuts and can't see the city having extra money. Pomeroy talks about proverbs and really makes me glad I didn't vote for her even if she was the only one running. Couldn't we find a real person to run for school board instead of these people. The council's bizarre sometimes but the school board are a pack of fools with no clue that THEIR JOB is to educate kids, not whine abut how they got no money and want it from everybody else. I gotta wonder how many of those people aksing for city money work for PUSD somehow. Holden asks if they have a finance committee and gets told no there's a citizen budget committee probly made up of all those consultants on the payroll over there. Holden talks about dropout rates and people choosing private school because public schools suck. He talks about cultural and classroom issues PUSD needs to fix. Honowitz says they can talk about dress codes and drop out rates but tries to say they need to concentrate on what they are doing together and completely blows off the dropout stuff and PUSD sucking for most of the kids in high school. Diaz says they need to pay attention to good progress they made and should reprioritize their projects for the next year. Bogaard wants an aggressive look at every opportunity.

TRUANCY REPORT: Michelle Bonnerise says they're catching truants and it's workin'. Lawyer Connie Orosso and John Zomorra from PUSD give the report that says it's helping with attendance at school. Zomorra talks about what goes on and it sounds good to me. Keeping kids in school is better. Now about Rose City graduate rates? Wack job Virginia Hoge talks about how people in the community think PUSD sucks and she hates us bloggers and the S-Nooze and Weakly. Then she bitches about how people can post about S-Nooze stories without being censored. She wants people and the newspapers censored. Miss Heartfield loves God and says kids don't go to school because they're not interested in school anymore.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS: Pattsy Lane reports they got some PUSD kids as lifeguards. Starting this summer PCC is funding an intern program for 15 interns. They're gonna also do 287 summer youth jobs that the city pays for and maybe some more from stimulus money from Obama. Some of those jobs are with private businesses too. Affordable Housing Bunny Jill Shuck says they should do Youth Build where kids learn building skills and get a diploma. Then she pimps second units so kids can get experience f*cking up my neighborhood. Good idea if you want even more people north of the freeway jamming into already too crowded areas. Pomeroy says something like we need to know wny kids drop out and how to keep them in school. Duh!

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: We have earthquakes and fires and they're gonna work together so there's plenty to keep kids safe and fed if there's an emergency. They're gonna work together on this. Makes sense, we all oughta be sure kids in schools are safe if there's an emergency.

POST FIGHT WRAP UP: The lightweights are lightweights. Nothin' got done really, but I guess nobody got hurt either so that's not so bad as it coulda been.

Virginia Hoge rears her head at the meeting and wants to shut up people who don't agree with her. I could hope his bosses duck tape Larry Wilson's mouth shut and get rid of his computer so I never have to see his name in the S-Nooze again, but I'm not about censoring anybody. man, the woman's weirder in person and nutsier, too.

Maybe Tornek will miss the rest of the meeting's too so his rich white folks only got Bogaard, Madison, Haderlein and McAustin representin' 'em.

I'm done without callin' nobody an ignorant whore or a scum suckin' politico scammer!

D.

Back to gettin' my pocket picked next week.

PUSD has lose almost 3,000 within the last few years. Many have gone to charter schools - some have left to go private schools - and most are leaving Pasadena.

3,000 students. Damn that is a lot ...

Demo grafix said...

Also families are being replaced by households with less kids due to the recent run up in house prices/rents.

Eric E said...

What the hell are you talking about "recent run up in house prices/rents"? Where have you been for the last year?

Eric E said...

I have to agree with you Dormitas, the school board actually makes the city council look good! It's all relative, and that's sad.

Demo grafix said...

"What the hell are you talking about "recent run up in house prices/rents"? Where have you been for the last year?"

I take the long view, look at a 10 year graph. In historical terms prices are still unaffordable.

House prices have fallen but who can qualify to buy them? And rents are still high. It is no secret that PUSD has been losing students to demo shifts out of Pasadena.

Forgive me for not stating the obvious in my prior post, I am too lazy to type so much exposition. Damn my stubby digits.

I just saw the video.

TOE-peks. Hilarious.

Angel Bec said...

I was paying $1,600 for a two bedroom in Pasadena in a decent area - but was spending over $1,000 in tuition on private schools - because my neighborhood schools are Cleveland and Muir.

No one afford the rents in Pasadena yet alone the house notes...

I just wish I lived in Pasadena....I love Dormitas commentary on the council, school board, etc.!

And don't forget the best schools on the planet!

The public schools work very well for some: Jobs for administrators, jobs for teachers, members to support the unions and positions for people who want to be elected to an office. It is a symbiotic relationship (like a mushroom on a tree trunk). The kids are a funding source; they do not have to get educated, they just have to show up. That is why things do not change. It works just fine as it is -- for everybody but the kids.

It would be refreshing if we had a councilmember or school board member who was not part of the local political machine who would shake things up with some "outside the box" thinking. An independent voice who reached out to the community for input and dialogue rather than the same old insider crap would be refreshing.

Eric E said...

North of Forest, the closest we had was Bibbiani on the School Board, but he lost an election. But even he, though he was an independent voice, could have been considered somewhat of an insider, since he had been an administrator in the public schools.
My question: what ever happened to simple civic-minded parents running for school board? My grandfather's highest academic achievement was a high school diploma, he worked as an industrial nurse in a copper smelter, and he was chairman of the local school board for 20+ years. He wasn't some PhD technocrat, and he never benefited monitarily from any involvement in public education.

Angel Bec said...

Eric E,

I agree with what you wrote about parents being school board members. However... the sad part is that I was a PTA President and the amount of crap that I had to overcome with the principle, the teachers and the school board was mind boggling.

"we can't do that... it's been done this way for years .... I have to get approval on that ... let me get back to you..."

I think that you should not be on the school board UNLESS your kid goes to public school.

Eric E said...

Demo, I see your "long view" point, and it's true that over the last decade or so, Pasadena's demographics have shifted toward DINKs and retirees, which means fewer kids and more money. It's a contributing factor, but it's not even close to being the driving force behind PUSD problems. Otherwise, you would have had perfectly good PUSD schools in the 1990s (not the case, and I would say they're slightly better now than then). The exodus of families from PUSD goes back much further than the recent (10-year) housing market trends.

Anonymous said...

Just wondering? Anybody know the percentage of the overall PUSD budget that goes to paying the salaries & pensions of staff and administrators?
I know in another similar size local city the amount is approximately 94%?

DGx said...

".....It's a contributing factor, but it's not even close to being the driving force behind PUSD problems....."

Agreed.

I would still like to experience the day when my district, District 1, had an independent voice speaking for us both from the council and the school board. Steve Madison was an independent voice in District 6 until the WPRA threatened to recall him over his favoring the NFL at the Rose Bowl. He blinked and they got him. Joyce Streator had the courage to vote her convictions but now look at what we got. Unfortunately I never met Ms. Streator and have only lived in the district for 5 years but I hear she voted as she saw fit and not with the City Hall mob mentality.

Angel Bec said...

Joyce Streator had a backbone, a brain and a mouth. She spoke the talk and walked the walked.

A few more should take lessons.

Anonymous said...

Joyce Streator was a great councilmember for our district. I always found it rather telling that she didn't endorse Jackie Robinson in the last election even though she must have had an unbelievable amount of pressure to do so. Robin would have been a strong advocate for our entire district and much more inclusive than Jackie but I do miss Joyce and wish her well in her after council life.

Sharkey said...

What kind of moron misses his first meeting as a councilmember?

Tornek did.

That's gotta be a first.

Mike

Anonymous said...

It takes a lot of balls to miss your 1st council meeting. Do we see another JR or Madison in the making? I guess he be "Tardy Tornek" from now on.

Angel Bec said...

Tornek got what he wanted. He's in. He'll show up when the issues are of interest to him or his district and they are putting pressure on him. Other than that he's typical...he's typical of what is elected and typical of what we put with city council members.

Anonymous said...

Name me one non-typical candidate that has run for council in the last 2-3 elections outside of that whack job, Jim Lomako, particulary in the NW? The only one of recent memory would be Robin Salazer who happened to be an incredibly wealthy white man running for a seat in a predominantly minority district and he would have won if not for the racially bigoted slander campaign against him. There was something about that guy that connected without people. He had more Black & Latino vote than white vote and that scared some folks. Others may be Bill Bibbiani,
Mary Dee Romney and Bill Crowfoot didn't always go with the machine.

Angel Bec said...

If Salzer runs for D1 - I will vote. The problem is that so called "Leaders" of the northwest will play the race card and the sheep will follow the "leaders" not understanding that what is holding them back are the so called "leaders" who couldn't lead out of a paperbag.

Del Monte St. said...

I know Salzer personally having met him at his restaurant and while he was campaigning in our district and I don't believe he has any intention to ever run again in District 1 because of the way the race card was played against him. He is one of the most hard working, open minded and progressive people I've ever met in Pasadena and it's a shame that people the likes of Ralph McKnight, Joe Hopkins, Danny Bakewell and Jimmy Morris spewed such hatred, lies and racially devisive campaign slander against him. There wasn't a better candidate running for the seat that could reach out to everyone in our community the way that he could. We lost a good one.

I hope that he stays involved in city politics at any level and I would support him and I'm sure many others would as well in any other district race he'd be involved in.

Virginia Hoge said...

Since I have been slandered here (as usual) let me say what I really said at the meeting.

I said that the Star News is publishing unmoderated comments on Topix that contain racism and hate, pointed at children.

I said that this was not right and not ethical.

You can call this "Free Speech" but when hate is directed at children, this is hardly acceptable (how can they answer back? should they have to? what about the hurt these words cause them? does anybody care about that?)

I said that the Council and the School Board should pressure the Star News to moderate their comments like almost every other newspaper does.

I did not say I hate bloggers or the PW.

Virginia Hoge said...

And for anyone who doubts my words on what I really said at the meeting, watch the video.

Dormitas is slandering me, again!

ginny is mad said...

"....Dormitas is slandering me, again!...."

Yet you do the same to others on Dormitas' blog. In the posts following the story "Council Blow by Blow for 4-27-09" you level a false accusation you have yet to retract.

Virginia Hoge said...

what false accusation??

Virginia Hoge said...

and your "user name" is also slander

g.i.m.

g.i.m. said...

Once again when cornered attack.

Still no retraction of your calumny.

Dormitas, must I endure this? This is the greatest injustice in the history of personkind.

Virginia Hoge said...

just give me an answer and stop whining to Dormitas,

I don't know what you are talking about,

make yourself clear

"Council Blow by Blow for 4-27-09" you level a false accusation you have yet to retract.

Read your final posts in the above mentioned thread on this blog. It is still up.

Virginia Hoge said...

this is so silly. First of all, all I see over there is YOUR "hurt" feelings (come on!)

and if you mean how you didn't call me crazy, I was referring to these (your) words in this comment:

"Be careful you are about to be accused of being an undercover agent of Reny Amy or the Proc, or the right wing Pasadena blogosphere conspiracy. Like a scientologist when questioned, even politely, she goes into attack mode, making any effort at dialogue pointless.'

Maybe you didn't use the word "crazy" but the implication is loud and clear.

What is the big deal about taking responsibility for your own comments??

And if someone publishes something about someone that is false, that someone has every right to point out the inaccuracies of what was said about them.

Why does this make you so angry/defensive?

If someone wrote something that was not accurate about YOU, (whoever you are), wouldn't you write and say "hey, this is not right"?

g.i.m. said...

"...Maybe you didn't use the word "crazy" but the implication is loud and clear...."

I hope you are not claiming to read my mind.

What is shocking is that your bullying is allowed to go unchecked

g.i.m said...

"....What is the big deal about taking responsibility for your own comments??...." Indeed

"Sed quid rides? Mutato nomine, de te fabula narratur!"

And of course no retraction of a demonstrable falsehood merely defensive dissembling.

Cynic!

J'accuse.

Angel Bec,

What the f*** does BSC's latest rant have to do with District One and it's candidates??

Houston?? Hello?? Is it me?????

Really? Wow!

Name calling is one thing but engaging in such bigoted hate speech is best left on Topix.

I love this entertainment blog of yours!

Virginia Hoge said...

yes, this IS the "entertainment" here:

publish sexist porn about someone (written by Aaron Proctor), leave it up for almost one year,

that person finally says "take it down"

don't take it down, engage that person in more righteous abuse.

Because? because you hate PUSD so much.

Welcome to Pasadena Political Underbelly

(you can say that again)

Angel Bec said...

Angel Bec,

So Aaron Proctor/the right to disagree with people's views, opinions/Pasadena Political Underbelly = hatred to PUSD.

And I thought we were blogging on this thread about the ineptness of District 1 and it's representatives...

who da thunk????

Reny Proctor Cumquat said...

You never know where you are going to land when you spin the Virginia Hoge wheel of random rants!

Fed Up said...

well it's no wonder the average person doesn't get involved in local politics, given the level of snark and nastiness here on this blog.

Oh pleez said...

If the level of snark in the comments section of a local blog deters one from public life I doubt their level of commitment to begin with.

The District 1 election put the Black community in a very awkward position. They had to decide between a White man who was involved on helping the community for years and voting to keep the seat Black. I don't how he did it but Salzer went form the bottom of the pack to frontrunner status in a couple of months and it scared some of the activists. We learned that he had been part of the Black History parade for years, supported many events in the community with fundraisers and donated food and I've heard has discreetly helped some in the community financially when in need. He probably had done more for the community than all of the other candidates combined and Bakewell and Morris as well. Joe Hopkins was recruited to smear and politically assassinate Salzer and Chris Holden for supporting him. Salzer was getting more of the Black vote than anyone expected. Not everyone bought into Hopkins foolishness but enough did to turn the election. He was charismatic and was seen all over the district walking the streets. Here was a wealthly White male republican and he was on the verge of winning the election with Black voters pushing his campaign. Some couldn't deal with that happening. We thought he had the voice that would resonate with the other White councilmembers, they couldn't tune him out or ignore him. Some in the community were thinking in 40yrs back terms that they couldn't fathom a White councilmember in the district so they attacked and that's the story of the election. Ms. Robinson may turn out to be a fine councilmember in time but we as a community missed an opportunity in 2007. Maybe the election of President Obama will teach us that we should vote for the person and not the demographic.

Angel Bec said...

I rank Hopkins along side Bakewell. Opportunities who take advantage of their own people but will throw the race card in your face at the first available opportunity.

Robinson has little to no interest in D1 period. She's simply looking to add it to her resume. She could be re-elected again and serve another term and it wouldn't make a difference.

We blew it. We blew it big time. We didn't want to vote for a man because he is white. JR was voted into that position for the sole purpose that she is black and a woman.

Now any other candidate that would have been an amazing event. In JR's caswe it is the ONLY reason that she was voted in - and we ended up with what we got.

Hopefully voters will realize next time around - although Hopkins and Bakewell will make sure that it's not a white man with money - regardless of how talented he is.

Anonymous said...

When is the community going to open up it's eyes. What has Bakewell ever done from the community except build a shopping center to take more money for the community. Why are we enchanted the with takers and we cast aside the givers. Why do we think at such a small level rather than taking a look at the big picture. Shame on all of us for a disservice to the entire community. That election had nothing to do with qualifications and eveything to do with race. The last person in Pasadena that should have ever been considered for the race card was Robin Salzer. Look at the mans history in Pasadena in helping the NW. The Pasadena NAACP gave him a community leadership award for his work in the NW and for founding the Lemonade Brigade. If this man is a racist then Bakewell and Hopkins are the most positive influences and most benevolent do-gooders of the community. You can put Ralph McKnight in that group too. Who were the 97% of the voters that voted for Barack Obama in Iowa? People, open your eyes and your minds.

Mark said...

I heard that he's moving a mansion to district 6 and will move there in the near future. Many people have said that they'll start a grassroots campaign for him in 6 if he wants to run there. A lot of people feel bad about the way he was treated and will work hard for him in any district. The fact that he's not a republican any more will bring out the volunteers in droves. The democrats will be working for Salzer rather than against him.
