Weekly Pasadena News Reports: Local Editor Resigns, Opens Toothpick Farm in Congo

From the Weekly Pasadena News:

Local Editor Resigns to Protest Tree Cutting
Wilson Retires to Eritrea to Take Up Toothpick farming

Forsaking a career as a purported journalist, local editor Larry Wilson has reportedly left the staff of the Pasadena Star-News. Following an unsuccessful crusade to save Colorado Boulevard's carrot and ficus trees, Wilson has sold his Pasadena mansion, packed up his wife and kids and left for Eritrea where he has purchased a toothpick farm.

"We will miss the talent, insight, perspective and effete erudition of Larry Wilson," said Star-News Executive Publisher Liam Rugg. "It's rare you can find a writer who can say so little with so many words. He will be missed."

The Wilson family, Larry, his wife Phoebe and three children Manny, Moe and Jack have already embarked for Africa. Neighbors reported the family fled Pasadena in the middle of the night. "Slinking away is a strong way to put it," said neighbor Ivan Yenkenit. "I'd say it was more like scampering away, myself."

"Larry's contribution to Pasadena is immeasurable," said Crystal Balvin, Pasadena's foremost bitching biddy. "He's been the voice of the wealthy, the inbred, the amazingly pale and the old for more than a decade. Who's going to speak for rich white people now?"

Wilson most recently tried to save several ficus trees along Colorado Boulevard. He's also well known for sucking up to Mayor Bill Bogaard and worshipping the ground beneath Pasadena Pops conductor Rachel Worby's feet.

"The information that we have is that Larry Wilson has left Pasadena and intends to take up toothpick farming in the Congo," said Star-News reporter Ivy Blindendum. "Apparently he chose to move his family to a place where trees are respected and revered. If he'd taken on Wolfe Burgers he'd probably be moving to India."

Wilson offered no comment upon leaving Pasadena. Reports that the family mooned the Rose Bowl, City Hall and Vroman's Bookstore as they were leaving town have not been confirmed."

Council Blow-by-Blow for 2-23-09

Back in full force. Teed up and ready to go at, uh, wireless telephones again.

Oh cool, another long meeting with no outcome.

They're off:

Mayor sounds like he's got a cold. Robinson's there, Madison's not but comes in later. McAustin's gone.

Police Chief Melekian tells everyone the FBI is going to investigate the shooting on Mentone. He says he's glad none of his officers got shot. Me too. I'm waitin' to hear what the report says, but it bothers me a lot that the PD story seems to be changing day to day.

Public Comment:

Paul Little from the Chamber comes to present some report about development in Pasadena. He wants it to go to commissions but Gordo wants the report to go to Ed. Tech committee instead.

Armina Durachy complains about the trees getting cut down by Vroman's and wants people to stop shopping there. She's hoppin' mad. Playhouse District dude Paul Jackoy says stick with the plan. Playhouse District woman yields her time to a guy named McCormick who confuses everybody when he says look at the plan again then says don't. Holden gets caught in the confusion and asks about redoing the tree decision AGAIN! Then Tyler says they should do the entire city but not the Playhouse trees and Bogaard agrees. Haderlein says why go back to it if they decided already. The McCormick guy says he didn't want the decision coming back but they should stay with the one they already made.

Brother of the Guy Who Got Shot says the City hasn't sent anybody to talk to his parents about the shooting and he wants somebody to respect the family and remember they're people too even if they live in Northwest. Woman isn't happy the police shot the guy and another guy says the whole city's gotta remember District 1 people are people too and they're coming back. These folks're trying to get people stirred up but there ain't many people there. Looks like more for the trees then the guy who got killed.

I think the police do a pretty good job most of the time and I like that my NWP neighborhood is safer now and I don't gotta be so worried about gang bangers harassing my wife and kids.

CONSENT CALENDAR: They're spending about 375K on water and power stuff. Not too bad. And they want the Gold Line done to Azusa.

FINANCE COMMITTEE: Quarterly investment report. City's mostly ok but the economy's not helping much. Capital improvements: they're doing a lot of work in parks, some at the Rose Bowl and on some streets and other things and they're fixin' the median on New York Drive.

CELL PHONE TOWERS: Staff babe talks about what Pasadena plans to do and what San Diego did and says Pasadena's as good or better than the SD laws. Madison wants Council to have more control to say no. Tyler asks about some spot in his area. Gordo's wanting to know how they would make the decisions and wants the lawyer to help him out but it's no help. There's some talk about what happens if the company woin't keep the boxes up and they are told they can make them obey the rules. Haderlein asks about parks and gets told no parks.
Public commenters: Bob Holmes from WPRA wants to know about notifications and if residents or owners get notified. Dale Trader counted 1856 opportunities for antennas to go up. Donnelly woman lives near Altadena and a neighborhood alliance and complains about a cell tower outside Pasadena. Joan Dooley from Southwest and Save the Hill and thanks the City Council for listening. Raymond Kwon is frustrated he only gets 2 minutes. Tess Kalfaian from Glendale wants to speak for Pasadena residents. Miriam Nakamura Kwon bitches about what's a public utility. Says cell companies ask for more towers than they need. Nadine Rondenella talks about how they couldn't talk about health, esthetics, and how the law violates her 1st amendment rights. She likes there being a performance bond and justification study and wants emissions checked more than every ten years. Gene Masuda reads two paragraphs about keeping control and protecting his neighborhood. Nina Chomsky says it should be strong and appeals going to the council and more cell antenna at the Rose Bowl.
Jabba the Hutt staff guy with a beard says they gotta live with the rules from the state and feds. Planning Director says the ycan do what the people were asking for if the Council wants. Robinson wants to send notices to everybody nearby. After an hour they pass the same deal hey were going to anyway.

LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE: They're gonna keep paying lobbyists $4000 a month in Sacramento.

MUNICIPAL SERVICES: They're gonna have a hearing to raise residential refuse fees and charging 79 cents for street sweeping and changing it to days from nights. The costs are going up 2.9% and have a hearing on April 9. They gotta put in 5000 street signs that are gonna cost $500K that's gonna be paid by the refuse fund. Madison wants to know why they're moving to daytime sweeping. Dale Trader is worried about signs in landmark districts. Michelle White wants to know if affordable housing complexes would get a different schedule and wants to be sure residents get notice. She likes clean streets. They're having a hearing! Great. How much more is this gonna cost me? What's left to raise? Electric and water?

ZONING CODE AMENDMENTS FOR DONATION COLLECTION FACILITIES: They're gonna regulate the yellow boxes for clothes drop offs. Michelle White wants non-profits to get a break.

GENERAL PLAN REVIEW COMMITTEE REVIEW COMMITTEE: Haderlein, Madison and Robinson are gonna pick the two people who wanna serve on the review committee. Robinson's gonna get suckered on this one by the two Steve's. Watch who gets on the committee People from WPRA and the bitching biddies.

ORDINANCE ON SIGNS, BOARDING HOUSES AND OTHER SHIT: Tyler wonders why it's a hundred pages of clean up and wants a summary so they can know what's in it. Michelle White complains it's not fair housing.
ORDINANCE IN SPEED LIMITS: Some are getting changed.
REDEVELOPMENT CHANGES: Something's getting done to Michelle White's gotta bitch about this one too. Man, she's packin' her complainin' all into one appearance. Does that mean we don't gotta see her again for six months?

SON OF PUBLIC COMMENT: Henry Sideroplis wants to bless the city and have a time of fasting and prayer in the city. Guy deserves the patience award waiting four hours to give his speech. Holden likes it. Nice note to end on. Too bad they don't end it here.
Bronislav Keckman wants to save the trees and presented a petition.
Weston DeWalt talks about the artwork at the auditorium. Man these people won't give up. Tree nuts and art nuts are persistent. But there still nuts, man.
Nancy Webster wants to stop the reign of fear of her landlord and police 'cause Obama's the new prez. She's nutso folks and has the police on her doorstep ans tell them only God can save them now.
Allen Spring wants to save the trees. He doesn't want a prayer day.
Richard McDonald talks about electric charging stations and land use.
Tina Vaughn who videotaped the whole meeting complains about the city cutting down the trees and wants to know what children think about cutting down the trees. How do you explain to kids about tree slaughter. Betty Cooper from Pasadena Beautiful wants a committee with Pasadena Beautiful, City Council, Youfac, the business districts and recommend new trees for Pasadena. Les Hammer complains about S-Nooze endorsing Gordo and talks about Mexican separatists returning California to Mexico. Nina Chomsky wants to save the trees and she's SHOCKED! Good enough reason to tear up some more trees. I'll start makin' a list. Emily Stork goofy nymphet doesn't like the trees were cut down in the middle of the night. No shows were Larry Wilson and his wife Phoebe. Guess the trees aren't important enough to stay up late. Oh, Larry, own up to startin' the Vroman's boycott, dude. Show a little cartilege in that limp wrist of yours, dude and own up. Erlinda Romo says businesses have been threatened and called. Caroline Cotton wants trees out. Carla Willetca says finish the plan. Council wants to look at street trees everywhere. They seem to think Youfac kinda sucks.

I think you all kinda suck!

POST FIGHT WRAP UP: Five hours and they didn't do much. People who complain about cell towers get all the time they want but people who come out to ask about how a guy got shot in their neighborhood get five minutes. Something's outta wack folks.

Man, Robinson looks wasted. What's up with that, babe?

It's 11:33 and I'm toasted.

and done.

Vogon Poetry Award Winner: Larry Wilson

Larry Wilson regales us with his wit (inflicts it on us) for today's column:

I think that I shall never see
A gingko unbroken by me
If against it I were to lean
Waiting in line for a movie screen
The old green ficus is dead and gone
Its shade ephemeral as the dawn
In its place will be a stick

Hey, Larry, how many trees are killed by the newspaper industry every day?

Can you spell hypocrite? Oh yeah, it's L-A-R-R-Y W-I-L-S-O-N.

Dozens of people turned out, says Larry in his column, but his paper didn't cover the event.

Oops. Guess nobody else at the S-Nooze cares.

I think that I shall never see
A columnist who can be
A functioning human
For us to pass
While all the while
His head be up his own ass

Vogons watch out!

Larry's rantin' 'bout the dead trees and stoopid art again.

Weekly Pasadena News Reports: District 7 Candidate Can't Find Boundaries

From: Oh, it's from the Pasadena S-Nooze:

Can the other candidates say myopic?

Here's the S-Nooze story from today's paper:

When District 7 council candidates met Wednesday to discuss issues at a Madison Heights neighborhood forum, they really zeroed in on local issues.

The discussion mainly centered on traffic on neigborhood streets, such as El Molino Avenue and other adjacent streets.

The district actually goes much further east than that area, into a part of Pasadena that doesn't really have problems with through-traffic on smaller neighborhood streets.

Candidates might want to take note of that: Terry Tornek, a member of the Planning Commission, who is running for the seat, said Thursday he was surprised to learn just how far east the district goes.

That would be all the way east, Terry - to the border of Pasadena.

I couldn't make this shit up. AND THE ASSHOLE'S A PLANNING COMMISSIONER, TOO!!!

Weekly Pasadena News Reports: Bogaard to Quit Council, Moving to Springfield to Launch Career as Lincoln Impersonator

From the Weekly Pasadena News:

Pasadena Mayor Contemplates Resignation
Cites help wanted ad seeking Lincoln impersonator at Illinois statehouse

DATELINE PASADENA: Mayor Bill Bogaard today confirmed that he is considering resigning as mayor of Pasadena. Rumors began to circulate after Bogaard was seen perusing Monster.com for employment as an Abraham Lincoln impersonator. Anonymous reports also claimed Bogaard was seen around Pasadena wearing a stovepipe hat.

City spokeswoman Ivy Lyon confirmed that the mayor has discussed alternative careers. "It is well known that the mayor of Pasadena is a renaissance man with myriad interests in things intellectual, mundane, artistic and sordid," Lyon said in a prepared statement. "If the mayor chooses to abdicate his role as Pasadena's political leader and pursue his muse, who are we to object?"

There have been numerous reports of sightings of Bogaard impersonating characters from the entertainment world. It was recently reported that he stepped in to stop an altercation in front of the Mann Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. "His muscles were all ripply," said Tinker Bell impersonator and eyewitness Bitsy Berserko. "He was real cute with the pointy ears and cape, too."

"It's not a big stretch to go from the caped crusader to the Great Emancipator," said Lyons. "Both liked dark clothes and underdogs."

Bogaard could not be reached for comment. Underdog dismissed any idea of taking over as Pasadena's mayor. "Why would I want to go from super hero to super fool?" he said.

Enjoy Wayne, we're back at it.

Council Blow-by-Blow for 2-9-09

We've got water, trees again and Nina Chomsky's backyard on the agenda. A long one with nothing that matters much unless you want to sell your backyard, too.

Bogaard does the pledge. Holden, Robinson and Haderlein aren't there at the start.

No back pats for Council pals. Bogey talks about how there's a chance for more pals to be on the General Plan Committee.

PUBLIC COMMENT: Trabia Simms says congrats on the Rose Parade and talks about how he had a kid born on New Years and he got stuck in parade traffic. Marvin Schecter bitches about how California's a mess and we need action on the Obama's recovery plan.

Tyler's in a hurry to do the trees, but Bogey says it's happening at 8 o'clock.

CONSENT CALENDAR: They're spending an extra $230K on Hamilton Park and trying to get $90K for forestry grants.

WATER PRESENTATION: Tim Brick from MWD staff says we got no water left and they're gonna raise the rates and force people to conserve. No surprises. Long talk to tell me what I already know. Guess he's earning his $$$. Can you say drought?

PLAYHOUSE TREES: Tyler has a plan but wont' say what it is. C.M. Beck wants to kill carrotwoods and save ficus trees. Tree huggers and a JPL scientists say save the big trees. Playhouse people and their pals say get rid of them. Sidewalks are a mess, trees are ugly. A guy in a wheelchair says the tree sap gets all over his wheels and he rolls it everywhere. He hate ficus trees. Old Town guy, Playhouse people, Chamber of Commerce guy say follow the plan. They dance around what the rules are but finally diss Tyler and keep the plan. Robinson's there now and looks kinda wasted again. Holden's here too. Nobody goes with Tyler's motion to change what they did before so bye bye ficus trees. Hello ginkoes. People are right, the sidewalks are a mess and the trees are kinda trashed anyway. They talk about some other stuff after thats' pretty confusing before the lawyer decides they can't talk about that so they decide to have a agenda item about trees sometime soon.

NINA CHOMSKY'S BACKYARD: City's back trying to by empty land for the Livvies for $6 million. Beck says they're gonna pay with park money. Nina and her pals want City to spend the cash so they won't get developments back there. Poindesxtery dude from the Santa Monica Conservancy says this is great. Chamber dude Little says the city's to broke to be buyin' the property but Gordo says it's not general fund $$$ and Beck agrees. They're buyin' some space for parking, too and say they got a group that'll do trails for free. Trails don't matter, nobody's gonna go there so Nina gets her backyard safe from new neighbors. Ugly buncha biddies comes out for this one, including bitching biddie queen Crystal Balvin. Council's doin' it. Mayor's pals get a buncha money. Is anything gonna happen in my Garfield heights neighborhood anytime? Do we get $6 mil too?

BUDGET: They're gonna do the budget by May and plan projects for the next five years.

WATER PLAN: We got no water. They're wantin' us to save more. It's gonna cost us and they're gonna change the rates and put in penalties so we either save or pay. Lot's of talk to say we gotta save more water and if we don't we're gonna have to pay a bunch more.

LEAF BLOWERS: Are a total pain the butt, but they keep gardeners from hosing. The city's got a law about how loud and messy they can be and the health Department dude is gonna have it enforced and that means fines. Sounds like there's also money to replace old ones with quiet new ones. Makes sense. A coupla public commenters really hate leaf blowers.

ORDINANCE: Changes something about redevelopment areas downtown.

McAustin talks about how the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (that COG they talk about) is all about traffic and the Gold Line and trying to get an urgent care center in the east valley. There's a homeless study from something called SKAG. The COG's got no treasurer 'cause nobody's happy bein' responsible for the money so it's gettin' outsourced. Holden wants to know about commissioners and gettin' new people to do it. Beck says they're gonna see about advertisin' it better.

Nina's got her backyard playground so Bogus keeps his pals happy. Playhouse gets new trees and that's about it. Five hours with nothin' much happening.

Pretty dull.

Sad but true

Where have all the bloggers gone
No one left to po-o-ost

The bitching biddies hold its sway

The City spends our mo-o-ney
On every whim and wisp
The oldsters get their way

And who gets screwed all through it?
Pas-a-deeena that's who
And who pays for all the shit

Council Blow by Blow for 2-2-09

Trees, trees, TREES! We're gonna hear all about trees. Maybe priorities, or are they the same for anybody but Tyler? Yawn, tired already and it's gonna be a long one.

Oh f+ck it. I can't do this tonight, I'm just gonna go shoot myself in the head.

Not really. I'll watch the rerun and post later.

OK. It took a while, but I'm ready for the six hour treefest

Michelle Bonnerise does the pledge. Lawyer woman gets it right.

PUBLIC COMMENT: Jose Luis Corea from North Lake Business Association. They want code enforcement to not make a restaurant take a sign down and he wants people to be able to have signs on the sidewalk. Juanita Westillman from Delta Sigma Theta talks about a conference on Feb. 28 about how young women can have good futures. Ron Carter from North Lake Village says they're tryin' to get more people shopping up there and wants help from the city. Wesley DeWolf, writer complains about the decision about getting rid of the stupid hats in front of the auditorium. Brian Berry says gang bangers can get jobs to quit the gangs and says his foundation started apprentice classes. Bogaard says the Police department is starting an apprentice program, too. Barry Johnson is a graduate from the program and says it's a good one. Diane Esher has a sick mother who complains about the power getting shut off 'cause she didn't pay her bill 'cause the mailman delivered it to somebody else and it took her ays to get her power back on.

City Manager says the City is having a workshop on March 21 about how people can stop forecosures and save their house.

CONSENT CALENDAR: Madison ca't vote on Caltech stuff 'cause he does work for them. How's that work? I'm on the city council so you gotta hire me?

CITY STRATEGIC PLAN: Beck says it's the work plan for the staff and says it's flexible. They've got 3 year goals. They are gonna have good municipal services, maintain fiscal stability, keep up the city buildings and support the local economy.
They're gonna fix the budget, find money for parks and open space (and Nina Chomsky's backyard), save water and electricity, improve driving and fix the bicycle plan and put in more art buses, and do fiber optics to JPL. They're also gonna do affordable housing and find jobs for people who lost their jobs at Indy Mac. Haderlein wants to know about previous goals and how these are different and says he didn't get elected not to improve parks. Tyler wants to get salaries in order. McAustin thinks the shitty economy is a chance to get the city budget in order.

PUBLIC HEARINGS: City's extending redevelopment areas so they can keep getting the money. Jill Shuck says they need to use it for affordable housing but they are gonna spend it on pensions for police and fire. They're also making a cool house on Rio Grande a landmark.
CELL PHONE TOWERS: City hasn't got a lot they can do about them, but the cell tower haters come out to complain. Mayor says they're doing everything they can but the haters from Glendale, Altadena and LA don't like the city doesn't do more. One person even said they got equipment to monitor electric waves. Sheesh!

RECYCLING: We're gonna try a new company that's cheaper to recycle the trash.

SOME COUNCIL PAL's quitting: Opens up a space for a new council pal.

TREES: Playhouse people have been at this forever. Council approved the plan in 1998. Even Youfac (whoever the f+ that is) liked it. Ten years on the Council fucks Vroman's and the Playhouse and holds off changing the trees. Playhouse people come out to tell the council to honor the plan. Tree people and Tyler wanna keep the hated trees even if they eat up the sidewalk and screw up sewers. Hey, what's a tree or two if people are gonna maybe lose their jobs. What happens if Vroman's get's poed and moves to the Arcadia mall? uh oh! At the end Madison wnts to know what the option plans are and gets no answer, so they're coming back next week to go over it all one more time.

Sheesh! These morons are acting like the state government.
