Summer's here and the time is right for... Council agendas with not much on 'em. They're going after Super Liquor tonight but everything else is fluff.
THEY'RE OFF: They're starting on time, according to the clerk's phone. Closed session but they only say they talked about stuff not what they really did. Robinson does the pledge and gets it right. They swear in a commish pal of Torneks.
PUBLIC COMMENT: Virginia Hoge's back talking about her blog and talking about Renee Amy and Aaron Proctor and bloggers like us and the newspapers. She goes after everybody and wants anybody who disagrees with her taken out and shot. Michael Murkowski pimps his book about art that he wrote with a grant from Pasadena. Wacko Nancy Nelson's back too.
CONSENT CALENDAR: They're spending money on all sorts of stuff, including $1.3 million for something called pedestrian heads.
ELECTRIC RATE BREAK FOR OLDSTERS: Our generous city electric company is increasing the money for poor and senior citizen subsidies by 50% from $5 per month to $7.50 per month. So when I hit 65, I can only pick my neighbors trash for bottles and cans to recycle five days a week instead of seven so I can eat because all my money pays for water, electric, sewer, trash and utility tax. They're doing this 'cause of the water increase. Staff guy Klinker says they're tracking down the water wasters and gonna help them save water. So PWP makes less money so they gotta raise my rates more? McAustin loves this shit, but I think they got her on staff now.
POLICE RETIREMENT BENEFITS: Survivors of retired police can get a monthly benefit instead of just an insurance payment and they get a $950 per month increase. Ok. It's good that survivors of retired cops get benefits, but $950 each month is a big raise, and it's not for cops who die on the job, it;s for the retired ones who pass away. Nice benefit nobody else in the world gets if they don't pay for it themselves. It's gonna cost $511K and add $359K in liability. Employees pay $2 per month and we pay $30K per year. Maybe it's a principle, but is this the time to be increasing anybody's pension benefits at a cost to taxpayers? Oh yeah, it's government. They got no sense at all and don't understand that real people pay the cost for all these little perks.
COUNCIL PALS ON COMMISSIONS: Friends get some attaboys.
UNSOLICITED WRITTEN MATERIAL ORDINANCE: City has an ordinance that got thrown out by the court. They came back with this one that says it's ok to put up a sign and tell people to not trash our houses if we don't want it. I say: Stop the trashing of our houses! Oh, sorry people the wack jobs win on this one and we get to have pizza joints and tree trimmers trash our yards every day. Come on, what's wrong with me gettin' to say no to some guy tramping over my lawn and droppin' some leaflets on my porch? NOTHIN' But the City Council that taxes the f* outta us can't protect us from people who trash our homes. Hell, Larry Wilson's against it, so it's gotta be the right thing to do. I GOTTA BE FOR IT. Gordo says he wants it. How'd McAustin get elected? She's a f*ing moron. When are normal people gonna get elected so somebody with some sense can make decisions instead of idiots like McAustin who got no clue about what matters to real folks. Wacko Nancy Nelson don't like it either, so it's gold in my book. Robinson's sounding more than just a little dumb, too. She doesn't get that the earlier one got thrown out by the court. My city council yanks the old law and doesn't do anything to help me keep these folks from trashing my yard. Only Gordo sticks up for us residents.
ZONING AMENDMENT TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT NONCONFORMING USES: I can't pick up what they are doing really except it decides when something's been empty so long it's not being used anymore.
APPEAL FOR SUPER LIQUOR: This place is a disaster and oughta get stopped from doing business. They cater to the drunks, druggies, gangsters and low lifes. Staff gives a long list of how Super Liquor violated its operating rules. There's lots of talk about a deemed approval ordinance and how the state law changed so Pasadena could bring in the ABC to restrict operation of liquor stores. Gordo's all over this and I thikn would probly like the place shut down. Consultant for the owner says the store's going to go out of business 'cause they can't sell anything for less than $5. Um, yeah! They can't cater to the drunks and street people and addicts anymore. Sorry if their clients and business model are built on bottom feeding. Dude says 510 people signed a petition in favor of Super Liquor. Residents line up to talk about how they hate Super Liquor and want more. One guy says the residents are a victim and have to deal with broken beer bottles people pissing in their yard and getting stabbed. He says hookers and drug dealers hang out after visiting Super Liquor. One woman says the residents aren't benefited by Super Liquor. One guy talks about finding a used condom on his car and short dogs on his property. Gretchen Bailey has pictures of the trash around her yard from Super Liquor. She says she got robbed and there was a shooting in front of her house. Another woman says the owners don't knwo what they are doing to the neighborhood 'cause they don't live there. She says they put up electric gates to keep people from screwing in her driveway. Really that's what she said. Day One person says shut it down 'cause liquor is a problem. Nichole Bernard lives within 200 blocks of Super Liquor and she sees lots of people there with problems. She's a teenager, so probly got spooked talking. James McQuarry says the issue is in his DNA and he's been on this since 2000. These people gotta live with drunk and drug magnet in their neighborhood. Too bad it can't get shut down. One guy called it a snake pit and it sure sounds awful to live near. I'm about a half mile away and see the mess down there but don't haveta live with it. Old people hate it. Hot babes hate it. Rich white guys hate it. I hate it. Only people who like it are people who get paid to like it. Shut 'em down!
There's a lotta talk about constitutional iesues from the pimps fronting for hte Korean liquor store owners, but really this place is a menace. Finally he council gets around to changing the conditions for the store so they can't sell tall boys, gotta close earlier and stop preying on he addicts. This one's Gordo's and he deserves a lotta attaboys for standing up and leanding on this one.
PUBLIC COMMENT REDUX: Francis Paters talks about people who deliver handbills and doesn't like that everybody thinks it's only illegals who deliver fliers.
OTHER STUFF: Madison asks about wireless court decisons. Tornek went to a General Plan Advisory Committee meeting and likes they're doing a lot of meetings. Holden wants to know about divesting assets from Iran.
I'm tired. They did a good thing with the liquor store. Three hours to do one good thing.

Wow! Did you see this one?
The S-Nooze got a scoop.
PUSD chief suffers mild stroke, is expected to fully recover.
PASADENA - Pasadena Unified School District Superintendent Edwin Diaz has suffered a mild stroke but was "in good spirits" Monday, district officials said.
Diaz, 55, suffered the stroke at his home Thursday and was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital, where he was treated before being transferred to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Los Angeles, said Binti Harvey, a spokeswoman for the PUSD.
Diaz called the district's headquarters Monday "in good spirits," Harvey said. He was expected to be released from the hospital todaybut will not be attending tonight'sschool board meeting, she said.
"He has undergone every diagnostic test and everything has come out 100 percent, and (he) is suffering no debilitation," Harvey said.
Diaz is expected to return to work Thursday. He will be gone next week on a previously scheduled vacation, she said.
Diaz has been at the helm of the 19,000-student district since March 2007.
Prior to coming to PUSD, Diaz held the superintendent's job at the Gilroy Unified School District.
The school district kinda sucks in a lotta ways, but Diaz seems like a decent dude. Hope he's gonna be ok.

Council Blow by Blow for 7-20-09
Easy one tonight folks. My money's on Virgin Hoge showing up to spew again this week. Other than that, not a lot to get worked up about except spending our money on stuff we don't know jack about.
Let the bellyaching begin:
THEY'RE OFF:
Everybody's here. Madison does the pledge and gets it right. A couple of council pals get sworn in. There's some Sister City students gettin' introed. Two Finnish girls, and a guy from Germany are there. They look like decent kids and say they liked being in Pasadena. Their English is way better then my German and Finnish and probly my English, too.
Southwest Chamber Music leader Jeff Bondershmidt talks about a program they have with the Department of State and Cambodia and Vietnam. Sounds pretty cool they got this together to bring music people here and send people there. He says something about public money for this too and junkets to Vietnam.
PUBLIC COMMENT: Nichole Bernard teen from Day One says there isnt' enough for teens to do. She wants to know what the city is doing to prevent violence. How about making sure there's more cops and the gangsters get sent to jail quick. The council's not gonna do shit, 'cause they can't really do shit but talk. Hey maybe if they spent money on ways to make jobs instead of making Nina Chomsky's backyard nice and safe from development something would be better and didn't waste a buncha council time talkin' 'bout trees on Colorado Blvd.? Just sayin' it's easy to see what's important to the council. Colleen Hagerty a Livvie likes that Linda Vista school's open again and people bring their dogs and wants it to be another dog park. Madison says that would be a big change. Nancy Nelson's the wacko of the week. No Hoge tonight. She's pimping some meeting about gardening.
CONSENT CALENDAR: They're spending $1 million for dog catchers and 200K for other contracts. They're gonna pay more for crossing guards too but McAustin doesn't like that these contracts are going up when the city's cutting back. How come the schools don't pay for that? Madison wants to pay the extra but McAustin says people cant' expect the city to fill their budgets. Finally they go along but the finance committee's gonna look at contracts and see where they can cut back. How about no more consultants for pet projects for councilmembers?
COUNCIL PALS: Get appointed to committees. No surprise there.
WATER RATE ORDINANCE: They're passing it. Bend over and take your lickin' Pasadena. PWP's got its hand in your wallet AGAIN! Madison asks how come JPL is workin' with JPL and Caltech and we're not. He's talkin' 'bout budget based rates too and otehr stuff that's probly gonna cost us money, too.
CITY PROCUREMENT REPORT: It's a report on statistics about where Pasadena buys stuff. Andrew Green the Finance Director punts to another dude named Larry who says Pasadena spends $129 million buyin' stuff. Since 2005 it's gone up $40 million thanks for Water and Power. WHAT!!! How's that workin" I pay mass quantites of money for water and power and they're buyin' $40 mil more in shit? And they're payin' less to local companies, too. Council wants to know how come the numbers slipped.
The Mayor bails out to go someplace else on council business. Haderlein takes over so I guess Gordo's gone too.
CITY HIRING REPORT: Karyn Ezell from Human Resources says there's over 200 full time employees. 2/3 of employees are minorities. New employees match Pasadena except white folks who are lower. Holden wants to break it down by department. Haderlein wants to know where there are more promotions.
It was such a slow one Bogaard and Gordo took off before it was over. Not much to tell. Nobody seemed worried Pasadena's spending way more this year then two years ago and nobody really asks why that is. Some more I could get, but $40 million more? You can't convince me cost for the same stuff went up that much. Maybe it includes buyin' Nina Chomsky's backyard for a park nobody will ever go to.
An hour and a half and they're done.
'Nuff said.

Council Blow by Blow for 7-13-09
Monday the 13th. It's a new dawn and a kinder, gentler Underbelly.
Everybody's there but Bogus Bill Bogaard. Gordo's running the meeting.
Joyce Streator does the pledge. Not sure why they got her there, but she's way classier than anybody sittin' up there now.
PUBLIC COMMENT: Virginia Hoge anti-free speech fascist wack job talks about her two year investigation into he who cannot be named. She hates the Weakly and wants them taken into account for giving him a job. She wants JUSTICE! Bitch is nuts folks! She has a mountain of evidence, though. A MOUNTAIN OF EVIDENCE! She wants an honest press. Edward Dallas says he's retirin' and wants to volunteer. He calls lotsa folks whipper snapper and he's leavin' 'cause he's got a long commute.
Gordo says Bogaard's due back any minute.
CONSENT CALENDAR: They're doin' a coupla hundred thou's worth of contracts but nobody talks about it.
BOB HOPE AIRPORT REPORT: Mr. Magoo lookin' airport exec talks about how they wanna expand the airport. They asked for a flight curfew and are waitin' for the FAA to approve it. Streator's the airport president. There's lotsa insider speak in the report but it sounds like they spent some money do fix up some things at the airport. They got state of the art baggage x-ray machines and they spent a buncha money to make houses quieter near the airport. That cost over $100 million. Man, if they didn't like the airport they shoulda lived someplace else. But hey, they created over 40 jobs. 40 whole jobs. But they do gotta program for local contractors to work for the airport. McAustin asks about getting light rail to the airport.
Bogaard's back in charge.
$600K FOR HOUSING: Yup, we're spending money for affordable housing. The bunnies are gonna line up with their hand out to get some. Some outfit called Mercy Housing's first in line. They're gonna buy foreclosed houses and fix 'em up. You betcha! We're gonna get 30 units for the $600K. If you make less than $68K per year, you can get a $300K house for only $70K.
BILLING CONTRACT: They're gonna pay a company $300K but will make $200K more then if they don't do the contract. These guy bill faster then the Fire Department and get money. OK. That makes sense. A company can do it better so it costs us less money in the long run.
SOME COUNCIL PALS QUIT, SOME OTHERS GET APPOINTED: Make a contribution, maybe you can be a commissioner too. Mr. Tillman comes up and says he thinks somebody who was not appointed shoulda got appointed. Tillman's a wack job from way back. Yikes some assholes never disappear. The guy talks about stuff going back to 1955. Loooney with a capital LOON! Hoge and Tillman. There's a pair.
WE GOT A WATER SHORTAGE: And the council's telling us when we can water the grass and how much it's gonna cost us. Phyllis Currie and Eric Klinker are there to pick our pockets. We can only water on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and we gotta fix leaks in 72 hours. Public comment: Alec from You Think Well isn't big enough to see over the podium. He's 8 and says we should take short showers. His sister Aline says kids can learn to save water. Rosalind Macoo says seniors need help paying for water and giving $2.50 a month is a joke. Jennifer Serja pimps her company 'cause they got kids writing about water and wants the Council to be stricter. They go for it big time. What's it gonna cost me really? Then they do hte ordinance that's really costin' us money. Thanks to Holden for pimpin' that one for us. Whatever happened to people who stuck up for us poor folk who pay bills.
PLANNING TIME LIMITS: They're gonna let developers have more time to build their abominable edifices. They can already get a one year extension and now can get a second one and will give people who expired a chance to get theirs extended too.
CITIZEN SURVEY: They paid somebody to survey voters about what they think about the council, I mean the city. Sure, it's about Pasadena, not how good the council's doing. People like Pasadena, love the fire department and police, don't bitch about development and traffic so much anymore. The data cruncher dude says there's a 10% margin for error. That's pretty big I think. People worry about the economy and think education kinda stinks. 40% of us think we're not gettin' our fair share. Holden wants to know how it all breaks down by district. Guess he wants to use it for his next campaign. No surprise they spend a lot more time on this then on the water stuff. That's about costing me money and telling me what to do. This is about what voters like. They're all interested in what people in their own districts think.
STRATEGIC PLAN: How's this work with the voter survey? Funny how it comes afterwards. Steve Mermelle does the honors on this one. They're gonna be financially stable. That means anytime they overspend they're gonna raise our electric and water bills. Everything else is bullshit really. They want us to be safe and fix the economy and have less traffic. ok. But what's the survey say you oughta be doing instead of this crapola.
They're gonna have two councilmembers on the general plan committee. It's gonna be Bogus himself and Terry Tornek.
Madison wants to know what happened at Boza and the Urgent Care was supported.
They're done after three hours. Virginia Hoge shows her Hitler face in public and spouts her fascistisms. Let's shut up the newspapers. Man she really must be missing he who cannot be named to come all he way down to the city council to bring him up again.
Hell, let's all go see Harry Potter and fugedaboudit. These idiots're just about takin' our money and gettin' re-elected again and again and again.
I'm done for now.

It's a New Day: New Rules
OK.
I'm back from beer, hot dogs, fireworks and fuzzy thinking.

1. Fits of temper over stupid government tricks.
2. Snarky comments about local news coverage
3. News that got missed by the above
4. Humor is allowed (preferred!)
5. Cleverness (see #3)
6. Taking me to task for my opinions
7. Your opinion

1. I'm moderating comments. If you're in category 1 or not in category 2, you're probly not gettin' through.
2. Comments need to relate to the original post. (Take note Raphael Henderson's mom.)
3.) Anybody who wants posting privileges can email me at underpasadena@gmail.com and ask for them. Be prepared to explain why you deserve to post here.
If I think of more I'll add 'em later.

TMI (Too much Idiocy) applies here, too. Too much of any number of silly posts and pet peeves by commenters who may or may not be who they say they are.

Happy Independence Day! Enjoy family, fireworks, hot dogs, cokes and beers. It's a weekend to celebrate our country and what it was founded to stand for. Remember the people in uniform serving overseas and at home. They are protecting our freedom every day.
